Chinese Americans are the oldest and largest ethnic group of Asian ancestry in the United States.

They have endured a long history of migration and settlement that dates back to the late 1840s, including some 60 years of legal exclusion.

We examined patterns of sexual behaviors of unmarried adolescents and youth (UAY) in three Asian cities (Shanghai, Taipei, and Hanoi) and identified factors related to the timing of initial sexual experience.

From analysis of a sample of 16 554 UAY aged 15–24 years recruited from Shanghai, Taipei, and Hanoi plus data collected from face-to-face interviews complemented by computer-assisted self-interviews for intimate questions, we learned: UAY in Shanghai, Taipei, and Hanoi have different sexual behaviors.

Compared with Shanghai UAY, study participants from Taipei and Hanoi were 3.64 times and 0.33 times as likely to participate intercourse.

These data can provide a basis for developing effective government policies and social interventions.

Interventions aimed at adolescents need to be culturally specific.

The dearth of data on Asian American adolescents has made it difficult to meet their needs.

But few realized their gold dreams; many found themselves instead easy targets of discrimination and exclusion.Affluent economic status increases the likelihood of early initial sexual experiences.Higher educational attainment may delay initial intercourse.American college students generally entertain a liberal attitude towards dating, tend to date young, date more frequently, and are more likely to develop sexual relationship.Their Chinese counterparts, on the other hand, hold less permissive view towards dating, tend to start dating at a much later age, and are less likely to have sex with their dates.in a developing country context cognizance must be taken of ensuring that the policy is implementable from a financial perspective, as well as balances all levels of prevention – primary, secondary and tertiary, as well as the need to comply with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the child.
